NEW DELHI: Equity indices on Wednesday started on a positive note with benchmark BSE sensex rising over 400 points in morning session, led by gains in index-heavyweights Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank amid a positive start to global equities.
At 9:35 am, the 30-share BSE index was trading 420.54 points or 1.03 per cent up at 41,400.16. On the other hand, the broader NSE Nifty scaled 129.30 points or 1.05 er cent to tradde at 12,157.55.
Top gainers in the sensex pack include Tata Steel, Ultracemco, Axis Bank, ITC, SBI and IndusInd Bank — with their shares rising as much as 2.39 per cent. All 30 stocks were trading in green.
On NSE too, all sub-indices were trading in green, with Nifty Metal, Bank and PSU Bank up as much as 1.64 per cent.
According to traders, domestic stocks followed global equities, which rallied despite concerns over coronavirus impact on world economy.
The death toll in China due to the novel coronavirus epidemic has crossed 1,000, while the confirmed cases have gone over 42,000, health officials announced on Tuesday.
In the previous session, the BSE sensex closed 162.23 points or 0.39 per cent down at 40,979.62. The index swung about 373 points during the day.
Meanwhile, on a net basis, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 184.58 crore, while domestic institutional investors offloaded shares worth Rs 735.79 crore on Monday, data available with stock exchanges showed.
